Learn more in our video story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rayonier.com\/stories\/how-foresters-use-controlled-pollination-to-improve-tree-performance\/\">How Foresters Use Controlled Pollination to Improve Tree Performance<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-is-climate-smart-forestry\">What is Climate Smart Forestry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate smart forestry refers to the sustainable management of forests with a focus on mitigating, reducing and adapting to the impacts of climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rayonier.com\/pdf.aspx?pdfid=56428#page=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate smart forestry approach<\/a> allows us to implement strategies that increase forest resilience and productivity, enhance carbon sequestration, and ensure the health of forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, climate smart forestry practices will enhance our forests\u2019 ability to capture (or \u201csequester\u201d) and store carbon, a critical part of addressing global climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate smart forestry practices also employ techniques to prevent the loss of carbon sinks, such as wildfire prevention techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"climate-smart-forestry-principles\">Climate Smart Forestry Principles to Guide Rayonier\u2019s Decision-making<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our in-house teams have defined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rayonier.com\/pdf.aspx?pdfid=56428#page=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four key principles<\/a> to help us grow healthy, productive forests in the coming decades:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"#flexible-planning\">Flexible planning<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#sustainable-forest-management\">Sustainable forest management<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#strategic-portfolio-management\">Strategic portfolio management<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#environmental-contribution\">Environmental contribution<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Here are a few examples of how we are putting these Climate Smart Forestry principles into action:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"flexible-planning\">Flexible Planning: Using modeling to plan for changes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a rapidly changing climate, it will be important that we stay <strong>flexible in our planning<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our foresters already use modeling, a forecasting tool to predict our trees\u2019 growth over time. We use these models in many areas of our planning, including our harvest schedules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By incorporating climate change data into our calculations, we can update these models as new information is available. Temperature variations predicted for the U.S. South and Pacific Northwest, where we\u2019re located, are less extreme than variations predicted in other parts of the world, such as much of Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch\/regional-information#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\">as reported here by the IPCC<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will employ <strong>strategic portfolio management<\/strong> when considering new timberland acquisitions\u2014looking at the likely impact of climate change in a region before deciding to expand there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"environmental-contribution\">Environmental contribution: Continually improving our own impact to reduce emissions even further<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, we must enhance our <strong>environmental contribution<\/strong> by reducing Rayonier\u2019s carbon footprint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because our forests capture carbon as part of the growing process and store it in trees, we are already carbon negative. That is, we emit less carbon than we store. But we also plan to reduce our emissions as new technology is developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-is-carbon-capture-and-storage\">What is Carbon Capture and Storage in Sustainable Forest Management?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Forests act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and storing it in trees, soils, and other organic matter. This process is known as carbon capture and storage (CCS) in forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate smart forestry emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices that maximize the carbon capture and storage potential of our working forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Role Working Forests Play in Carbon Capture and Storage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1lxPNtt0e6c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"the-role-of-working-forests-in-carbon-capture\">The Role of Working Forests in Carbon Capture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Working forests are critical to this mission because of their ability to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As forests grow, they capture carbon via photosynthesis and store that carbon. Forests planted for timber are managed to grow quickly, maximizing their photosynthesis and thus their carbon capture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they have matured and the growing process slows, they\u2019re harvested\u2014and the carbon remains stored in the products they become, such as lumber and furniture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the land where they grew is replanted with the next generation of trees, starting the fast-growing trees\u2019 carbon capture process all over again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, forests capture about 24 percent of the carbon emitted each year in the U.S. and about three-fourths of that carbon is sequestered by working forests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestcarbondataviz.org\/\">as shown in this report by NCASI<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rayonier.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Trees-store-carbon-after-harvest.jpg\" alt=\"Freshly cut logs in the forest that continue to store carbon\" class=\"wp-image-3991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forestrycareers.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Trees-store-carbon-after-harvest.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/forestrycareers.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Trees-store-carbon-after-harvest-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/forestrycareers.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Trees-store-carbon-after-harvest-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carbon is not only stored in standing trees, but also continues to be stored in the products they become.\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"climate-smart-forestry-beyond-carbon-capture\">Climate Smart Forestry Beyond Carbon Capture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the capture of carbon, climate smart forestry aims to reduce the <em>loss<\/em> of carbon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in the case of drought and wildfire, the best forest management plan is to reduce the number of trees. This means that, as a nation, we need to emit less carbon than we capture and store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate smart forestry is an important tool in the global quest to address climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One tangible example: the recent increase in catastrophic wildfires has weakened forests and limited their ability to sequester carbon.
