Mill Controller

Mill Controllers are responsible for overseeing the operations of a sawmill or a wood processing facility. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that the production process runs smoothly and efficiently.

Mill controllers develop and implement production schedules in order to manage the timing and efficiency of wood production processes. They monitor these processes to ensure that product production runs smoothly and efficiently and is conducted in a safe manner. A key responsibility is ensuring all employees working under their management are safe operating equipment. They manage quality standards and identify and resolve any issues that occur.

This position may also be referred to as a Wood Processing Manager, General Manager or Mill Production Supervisor. Sometimes overlaps with the role of a Mill Manager.

Education

Employers often require an Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree in a business management, engineering or forestry field.

Helpful courses to take in high school include business courses, mathematics, welding or metalworking as well as agricultural-focused courses.

Tools of the Trade

  • Mill equipment such as a forklift, log loaders and skidders.
  • Basic hand tools such as a hammer, wrench and screwdriver.
  • Safety gear for protection, such as hard hats, safety vests, gloves, goggles, ear protection and steel-toe shoes.
  • Basic computer software applications such as Microsoft Office.

Important Skills

Leadership skills are necessary for excelling in this position. The mill controller manages mill personnel daily and must be able to communicate and lead well across the mill. 

Knowledge and skill in operating mill equipment such as a forklift and log loader. This individual must also know how to maintain and repair the equipment utilized.

Attention to detail and good problem-solving skills. Mill controllers must be able to ensure that finished products meet quality standards. They also need to be able to identify any problems that occur and offer solutions quickly.

Job Responsibilities

Some of the primary responsibilities of the mill controller include:

  • Manage mill personnel. The mill controller manages and directs mill personnel, including machine operators, sawmill laborers, and other mill workers. They schedule, train and guide these workers daily.
  • Track and monitor production processes. The mill controller is responsible for tracking production metrics such as production volume, efficiency and quality. These metrics are then provided to management in detailed reports.
  • Maintain and repair mill equipment. The mill controller ensures proper management of mill equipment, ensuring that it is properly maintained and repaired when needed.
  • Ensure the mill is in compliance with safety regulations and standards.
