The Forestry Lifecycle

Seedling Nursery

More than 1 billion trees are planted every year in the U.S. While deforestation is a problem in other parts of the world, in America there are more trees growing today than there were 100 years ago! This is thanks, in large part, to the forestry industry, which plants an average of three trees for every one tree it harvests.

Many of the trees planted throughout the nation get their start in seedling nurseries. A seedling nursery gives the baby trees a lot of attention, growing them in nutrient-rich soils and watering them regularly for the first 1 to 3 years of their lives. When they’re strong enough to thrive in a forest, the baby trees are replanted.

NURSERY

A SEASON IN A SEEDLING NURSERY

A seedling nursery is a busy place year-round, from planting seeds in the early spring to sowing the seedlings and shipping them to forests in the fall. Each step at the nursery is critical to set the future forest up for success.

NURSERY

CONTAINERIZED VS. BAREROOT SEEDLINGS

A nursery can plant baby tree seedlings in small containers, or they can be planted into the ground. See what the advantages and disadvantages of each of these methods are, and learn how they work from sowing to lifting.

The Sustainability Story

On its own, a forest will naturally drop seeds, but it can take a long time for the trees to grow. Add to that the competing weeds and bushes, and many fragile tree seedlings would not survive. A seedling nursery ensures that trees will not only survive, but thrive when they’re planted in the forest, ensuring a rich ecosystem for years to come where they’re planted.
