Forestry Career Resources

For Educators

This website is designed with ready-to-use lessons for your classroom. Choose a subcategory under any forest lifecycle section, and you'll find questions, videos and photos that offer real life applications for topics required in your curriculum.

Your class can also submit a question for a forester to answer in the near future!

Below are a few examples of STEAM-related topics included on this site:

For Educators

Genetics

In the Research Section, forestry scientists explain how they breed top-performing tree families to improve future forests' health, including selection for insect and disease resistance, resilience again extreme weather and optimal growth.

Students can watch a video about controlled pollination, in which researchers go into the treetops to place bags over young female pinecones before pollination occurs. Once the cones are ripe for pollination, the researchers inject pollen they obtained from optimal tree families into the bags, thus controlling for both of the parents contributing to the pinecone's seeds.

Protecting Wildlife

In the Environment Section, we take a deep dive into the ways foresters protect wildlife.

Students can watch a video that explains how foresters locate and protect gopher tortoise habitats in the Southeast. They will learn what makes the gopher tortoise a "keystone species" and why it's important.

This section also includes a video about how foresters are restoring critical salmon habitat in the Pacific Northwest. They will learn why shallow, upland streams are critical for salmon breeding and rearing.

Math and Mapping in Forestry

In the Maintaining the Forest Section, we take a look at how foresters use complex math and mapping techniques to manage the forest and plan for the future.

The section includes a video explaining how foresters measure a specific plot of trees and uses trigonometry to calculate the estimated wood volume of a large section of forest based on that data. We also look at how foresters use technology like GIS, drones and LiDAR to monitor forest health and predict growth.
